Sunday Oil 11 Stage 1
This painting was created to give myself a reference for the colors I would eventually use in the finished painting.

Once I had most of my colors in place I began what will be the basic underpainting for the finished work (see below). I wanted to get the drawing in place and to put transparent colors down mostly in the shadows and halftones so that when I start on the light and highlight areas my panel is not muddied by dark colors. I am hoping this will allow me to work fairly thinly in the lights to create a very smooth and luminous painting surface. I would like my paintings to have more of the qualities that I admire in paintings of my heros from the 17th and 18th century than I have previously been able to achieve working in an alla prima style. STAY TUNED FOR UPDATES AS THIS PAINTING PROGRESSES.
